This timeline runs from 1975 to 2015.

Here, in sequence, are the points on the timeline.

Between 1975 and 1978:

Foothills puts forward its proposal for an Alaska Highway Pipeline.

NEB selects Foothills project as generally preferred route for sourcing Alaskan and Canadian gas.

Canada and the U.S. sign the Canada-United States Agreement on Principles Applicable to a northern Natural Gas pipeline.

Pipeline route in Canada is certified with the passage of the Northern Pipeline Act, which also creates the Northern Pipeline Agency.

Between 1980 and 1985:

The Pre-build, originating in Caroline, Alberta, is completed, sourcing gas from Western Canada.

The easement through Yukon is granted to Foothills.

Between 1985 and 2000:

The Pre-build undergoes five expansions, reaching its current capacity of 3.3 Billion cubic feet per day.

Between 2005 and 2010

TransCanada Alaska Co. is awarded a license under the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act.

TransCanada Pipeline Ltd. And ExxonMobil reach an agreement to jointly pursue the project, commercially known as the Alaska Pipeline Project (APP).

Between 2010 and 2015:

TransCanada, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips and BP agree to work together on evaluating options for a large-scale LNG export facility from south-central Alaska as an alternative to a natural gas pipeline through Alberta.
